The foundation sector in Canada is very diverse in terms of asset size, geographical scope and funding interests.
- The total number of foundations registered with CRA as at December 2007 is 4,818 public and 4,479 private foundations
- Total assets of all private foundations: $15.1 billion.
- 11 of the top 20 foundations by assets are family or private foundations with total assets of over $3.5 billion
- The distribution of foundations in Canada reflects the population:
64.9% Central Canada (QC, ON)
31.6% Western provinces (AB, BC, (MB, SK)
3.5% Atlantic provinces and Territories (NL, PEI, NS, NB, Terr)

Independent grantmaking foundation assets in 2006: $509 billion U.S. (83% of all foundation assets)
Independent grantmaking foundations made grants totalling $27.5 on in 2006 (70% of all giving)
Total number of independent grantmaking foundations in 2009:over 80,000
